Prosper Global is a leading global humanitarian and development organization working with communities on the frontlines of conflict and climate change; in 2025, it reached more than 36 million people with urgent aid and long-term solutions. Through the PROSPER Senegal Project implemented by Prosper Global (Mercy Corps Senegal), the organization is helping newly electrified rural communities put electricity to productive use—advancing Energy Corps’ focus on translating energy access into higher incomes, new jobs, and stronger local economies.

Focus & Impact
From Access to Opportunity. Getting connected to electricity does not always mean a household or business can easily use it to earn income. Many newly electrified communities in Senegal still use power mainly for lighting and phone charging. PROSPER Senegal helps create opportunities for micro and small businesses to move from basic access toward energy sufficiency, using electricity as a tool to grow businesses and create jobs.
Putting Electricity to Work. The project will directly support approximately 50 micro and small enterprises and producer groups, particularly women- and youth-led businesses. Participants will gain access to productive-use equipment—including refrigeration units, milling machines, irrigation pumps, oil presses, and other tools suited to local agricultural, agro-processing, retail, and service activities—along with business coaching, technical assistance, and connections to appropriate financing.
Strengthening Local Markets. Beyond supporting individual enterprises, PROSPER Senegal will strengthen the wider market for productive-use technologies. The project will work with equipment suppliers, distributors, financial institutions, service providers, and local authorities to improve rural supply chains, expand access to financing, and support equipment maintenance and after-sales services.
Project Funded
Energy Corps funding will build on the Millennium Challenge Corporation Senegal Power Compact’s investment which extended the electricity grid to participating villages. With its Energy Corps grant, the productive-use model will scale up into seven newly electrified villages in the Fatick and Kaolack regions. By helping entrepreneurs make productive use of newly available electricity, the Energy Corps-funded project is expected to directly support at least 50 enterprises and indirectly benefit more than 6,600 community members through job creation, expanded goods and services, and stronger local economic activity.
